So, let's talk about red velvet cake, shall we?
Red velvet cake, according to Wikipedia, is a "rich cocoa-flavored cake with a distinctive reddish color, typically prepared as a layer cake with buttercream or cream cheese frosting."
What that's saying is that red velvet cake is basically a chocolate cake that is the color red, with different frosting.
...So why do I like red velvet cake so much more than chocolate cake??
Well, that's a mystery! Another mystery is what artificial ingredients are put in food coloring to turn the chocolate cake red. In this shake, there is nothing artificial or fake, because to make it the color red I used strawberries. Hooray!!
Plus, it's almost as thick and frosty as a real milkshake, and only 150 calories! .... You might need to make a double batch! ;)
P.S. have you seen those red velvet cupcakes from Costco?! Talk about gigantic!!

Red Velvet Chocolate Strawberry Shake
- Just under 1/2 cup almond milk
- 2/3 cup frozen strawberries
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp coconut butter
- Splash vanilla extract
- Stevia (I used 2.5 packets) or other sweetener, to taste
- A few ice cubes (I froze almond milk into cubes to not dilute the flavor)
- Chocolate chips, optional
Add everything to a blender (I used Vitamix) and blend until smooth. You can either blend the chocolate chips in the smoothie or use them as a garnish; I did half blended and half garnish.
